A more heavily disguised prototype of the 2009 Maserati Quattroporte was caught testing in Sweden this week and the extent of camouflage makes us suspicious of the degree of the Quattroporte's mid-lifecycle freshening.

With this amount of camouflage, it looks as if the complete front end could be revised. The powerful sedan's headlamps look bigger and there will likely be larger air intakes in the car's new front bumper.

Spy photographers were unable to snap shots of the Quattroporte's rear, but the shooter tells us that the rear bumper was also disguised with black tape so expect changes to the Maserati's back end as well.

The next Quattroporte is due in 2012 rivalling the Porsche Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide.

When a test drive goes horribly wrong




A teenager from Victoria, Australia went to their local Holden dealer and took a Holden VY HSV Clubsport out for a test drive. It was all going well untill the teen put their foot down on the gas pedal on the last corner before the Holden dealership.

The teen loses control of the sporty Commodore which went flying into the air after hitting a kerb.

The car went through the dealership’s gate, landing on several cars.

Good things come to those who wait - and here is the proof!

Fans of the Alfasud have been killing time for more than 23 years and now the very first spy photos of the new Junior have surfaced the Web.

The "Junior" is set to be revealed at the upcoming Geneva motorshow in March and will rival the upcoming Audi A1 and the Mini Cooper whilst slotting under the 147 in the firms line-up.

Although there is no official name yet, Alfa Romeo let Internet users name the car. The winning name was "Furiosa" but Alfa executives decided to ditch the name after the results came in.

The first photo doesn't reveal much except from a foglamp but we expect the new comer to feature the trademark nose treatment which can be seen on the Brera coupé, 159 and the Spider. Its shield shaped grille will be flanked by a trio of projector style headlights. The rear photo gives us a glimpse of the rear bumper and uncovered the oval shaped exhaust tips.

Under the hood will be the brand's JTD diesel engines alongside direct-injection petrol units which will deliver power to the front wheels.

Teaser: 2008 Mercedes SL-Class facelift


Yesterday, Mercedes Benz announced the addition of two new top-of-the-range AMG models to its SL product range; the SL63 & SL65 AMG. To uphold some momentum ahead of it official launch, Mercedes published only a three-quarters rear view teaser image of the V12 bi-turbo SL65 flagship model, leaving the front end restyling open to assumption.

Apart from the antagonistic new rear air diffuser with the standard AMG quad exhaust pipes, a small rear spoiler and what appears to be "997 Turbo"-inspired wheels, the rear of the facelifted SL AMG model barely looks different from the pre-facelift model.

As far as we know, the SL65 will be powered by a 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12 powerplant developing around 612 hp and torque in excess of 1,000 Nm. The SL63 which will replace the SL55, will receive a 525 hp V8 with 630 Nm of torque. Joined with AMG's seven-speed "SPEEDSHIFT MCT" gearbox, these latest AMG beasts should offer true 'Fahrspa.'

The new Audi A4 sedan has been available for test driving at Audi dealerships for just a few days now – in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

“At the time of market launch in the first European countries we already counted 33,000 customer orders,” said Ralph Weyler, Member of the Board of Management at AUDI AG for Marketing and Sales. “The orders received and the impressive response from customers and the media have exceeded all our expectations. From our perspective, this is an extremely positive sign. As our most-sold model, the Audi A4 holds a special significance with respect to our ambitious goals.”

Although the new A4 sedan is just now being launched, it has already won some major awards. The new A4 was honored with the “Golden Steering Wheel” as best midsize car by Bild am Sonntag newspaper, and also received the Auto Trophy 2007 from Auto Zeitung magazine. The sedan outdid its competitors handily in the numerous comparison tests performed by Auto Zeitung and auto motor und sport magazines. In the individual test carried out by auto motor und sport, it achieved the top five-star rating.

With these honors, the new A4 moves seamlessly into the successful footsteps of its predecessor. As the eighth generation of the midsize sedan, the new model replaces a highly successful generation that rolled off the line for the last time in November of 2007, and one that sold about 2.2 million units worldwide.

In January 2008 the new Audi A4 will also be launched onto the market in France and Spain, and will then gradually be introduced in the remaining European countries. In the United Kingdom, Audi’s strongest export market in terms of sales, the A4 will start selling at the end of February 2008.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the release of the new Fuga luxury sedan, which went on sale at dealers across Japan today. Since its debut in 2004, the Fuga has been highly praised by customers for its exceptional performance, class-leading interior roominess and a variety of luxurious interior trim options. From January 17 to 27, 2008, the 86th edition of the Brussels International Motorshow will exhibit what is new in the world of automobiles and motorcycles. Together with the New Musa – recently presented at Frankfurt and Bologna - Lancia will introduce the New Phedra, the best example of the “Italian art of living” now offering revised looks for vehicle exterior and interior, a more comprehensive range and above all a new 2.2 Multijet 170 HP powerplant coupled to a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission (the latter coming on stream next Spring).

Peugeot Citroen to build its first factory in Russia

PSA Peugeot Citroen, a French automobile and motorcycle manufacturer, is planning to build its first factory in Russia, one of the fastest expanding markets in Europe.

The new plant will be established in the town of Kaluga, southwest of Moscow. The company will start the production by assembling mid-sized vehicles in 2010.

The French auto maker is in goal to have 100,000 vehicles sold in 2010. It hopes to sell three times of that annually in the following years.

Same as other global firms, may it be the maker of Acura Integra cold air intake filter among others; Peugeot Citroen will build their cars in a Russian plant to avoid heavy import duties for the Russian market, a lucrative market as correspondents regard it.

This year, around 2 million new cars were sold in the country. However, analysts say that low levels of ownership mean that there is room for rapid growth in demand.

Separately, Hyundai Motor Co., the world’s 6th largest auto maker, also plans to build a car factory in the county. The Japanese car maker is willing to invest 400 million dollars to establish the plant in St. Petersburg within the first half of 2008. It is also in goal to manufacturer 100,000 vehicles a year.

Nissan Qashqai hits 100,000 Customer Sales in Europe

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., a Japanese automobile manufacturer, began selling its Qashqai – the company’s very popular compact crossover - last March. During the last week of November, the vehicle reached the landmark of 100,000 customer sales in Europe.

By fact, the UK, Russia, and Italy are the Qashqai’s three largest markets. The demand for Qashqai in most countries, which includes Ireland, has dramatically surpassed expectations.

To tap the surging demand for the car in Europe, Nissan has increased production by 20 percent last June at its factory in Sunderland, to where the compact crossover is manufactured.

The Qashqai has strong distinctive design that sits between a traditional hatchback style and a more robust elevated SUV shape that is very appealing to the European market. European buyers were attracted to the premium quality interior and overall design of the Nissan Qashqai. Nissan says that buyers of Qashqai in Europe typically used to drive a compact hatchback (like a Megane or Astra), an entry-level family hatchback (like a Laguna or Avensis), or an economy SUV (like a Sportage or Hyundai Santa Fe).

The athloneadvertiser.ie says, “The Qashqai was designed and developed in Europe following extensive research of local market buying patterns and a deep consumer analysis of unmet needs among car-buyers. Nissan Europe’s product planners identified an opportunity in the market to design and develop a vehicle which provided more dynamic design, without the perceived aggression of a compact SUV. Yet it should maintain the elevated driving position which is popular, but not at the expense of driving enjoyment. The Qashqai is that model.”

The Qashqai was designed at Nissan Design Europe in London. The technical development was made at the company’s technical centres in England, Spain, and Germany.

So far, the Nissan Qashqai was awarded the maximum five-star rating for adult occupant protection from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). It has obtained the highest ever recorded score for any vehicle. In that case, Honda, the maker of Acura Integra antenna, among others, is likely facing another good opponent in the market.

Based from smh.com, New Zealander Clive Matthew-Wilson, author of The Dog & Lemon Guide 2008, said that Australians were risking their lives as they buy European models. He said, “In Australia and New Zealand, European cars have a certain exotic cachet. It’s so often that people have the impression that they’re getting something better than average when in fact it’s the opposite.”

Matthew-Wilson claims that European cars have a “shocking shelf life”, are poorly built, unreliable, expensive to fix and consistently feature at the bottom of British and German customer satisfaction surveys. He said, “Mercedes Benz definitely hovers among the worst, so does Volkswagen … Yet if you asked 19 out of 20 people on the street they’d say they’d be well above average.” “The best of the Europeans equals the worst of the Japanese. Australian cars are somewhere in-between. Australian cars are really the best for the Australian environment, as obvious as that sounds,” he added.

Matthew-Wilson mentioned that the biggest “lemon” was the Land Rover Freelander 1997-2006 models. Based on the records from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ VFACTS, 7431 units of those models were sold in Australia up to the end of 2006. Matthew-Wilson said that the vehicle has been released to the public with 132 recognized faults, which includes engines that blew up after a few months, gearboxes that “disintegrated without warning and drive shafts that fell off while the car was being driven”. By fact, in the past year, Land Rover was the ninth most popular off-road passenger vehicle in NSW.

Contrary, European cars were featured on the list of the most popular vehicle makes. It has joined the Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Peugeot, Volvo and Audi.

Jack Haley, NRMA manager of motoring research, said that European cars performed well in the organization’s crash tests. He claims that there was no evidence that the vehicles had shorter shelf lives than other makes.

This is really confusing, don’t you think? Well, a big portion of the real answer to this issue is the experience held by the actual drivers and owners of the European cars. And, a study focusing on this matter would do great help.

Automobile Magazine, America’s leading automotive lifestyle publication and part of Source Interlink Media, announced that the Audi R8 is its 2008 Automobile of the Year. The magazine also named the R8 Design of the Year and GM’s Two-Mode Hybrid System Technology of the Year.

Audi’s first foray into the sports car arena impressed the editors with its depth of abilities, which include straight-line speed, deep reserves of power, generous suspension travel, laser-like directional stability, and the surefootedness of all-wheel drive. The R8’s glass-encased, 420-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 engine has the sound of a traditional Italian supercar. Editors called it a great real-world sports car in the vein of the Porsche 911, but with the exotic presence of a Ferrari.

"The R8 absolutely captivated the automotive world this past year," said Jean Jennings, President and Editor-in-Chief of AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE. Corvette ZR1 heading to US

Chevrolet, the largest automobile brand owned by General Motors (GM), is about to bring its 2009 Corvette ZR1 to the US market in the third quarter of 2008. The company calls the car “an American supercar that not only establishes new benchmarks for production-based power and performance, but challenges global competitors.”

According to Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper, “The ZR1 redefines what an American supercar can deliver with performance that betters exotics costing two, three or four times as much – and can still be driven as a daily commuter.”

Peper said, “Preliminary testing shows the ZR1 beats the previous Corvette Z06 in every performance category … from acceleration and braking to cornering grip and top speed … It all boils down to the power-to-weight ratio and the ZR1’s is exceptional – better than the Porsche 911 GT2, the Ferrari 599 and even the Lamborghini LP640.” “In fact the ZR1 is expected to be the first production Corvette with a top speed of more than 200 mph,” he added.

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 is powered with a 6.2 L, supercharged V8 engine that breathes through a positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger with a new, four-lobe rotor design developed by forced-induction specialist Eaton especially for the engine and a central, horizontal intercooler.

Due to the strengthened, lightweight valvegear, the new ZR1 revs to a dizzy 6600 rpm. The vehicle even kicks out an estimated 462 kW and 823 Nm.

The new Corvette ZR1 has the sporty looks inside and out. It has a raised, all-carbon-fibre bonnet with a clear, polycarbonate window showing the top of the intercooler with “LS9 SUPERCHARGED” embossed on either side and the Corvette crossed flags on the engine cover. The exposed carbon-fibre comes with a clear coat – to protect it from UV light.

Inside, there is a special instrument cluster with a boost gauge, a ZR1 logo on the rev-counter and a speedometer that reads to 220 mph.

Optional features are the chrome wheels and a “luxury trim” package that includes power-adjustable, leather-trimmed sport seats in a choice of four colours and embroidered with ZR1 logos, satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

At present, the company has no plans to build a right-hand drive model for this new Corvette ZR1. That’s a pretty sad part; some wouldn’t be able to see such sporty Corvette from behind your cars through the Acura CL mirror, in some of the major countries around the world.

Crossover segment continues to expand

Subaru of America, Inc. today released the first official photos of the all-new, third-generation 2009 Forester, a total re-design of the award-winning crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that will debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January. The 2009 Forester, which arrives in Subaru dealerships this spring, builds upon its predecessor’s reputation as an icon of safety, dependability and versatility. The new-generation 2009 model projects a bolder, more SUV-like design and making a major leap in safety technology, comfort, refinement and driving dynamics. As with all Subaru models, the 2009 Forester comes equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. An all-new platform featuring a 3.6-inch longer wheelbase (now 103.0 inches) and double-wishbone rear suspension improves crash-worthiness and at the same time provides crisper handling, a quieter ride and increased interior space and cargo room. The 2009 Forester once again blends positive SUV attributes including a high seating point and interior versatility with passenger car comfort, handling and fuel efficiency. All Forester models for 2009 feature standard side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, and the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system is standard on all models for the first time. With the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3), Subaru optimized all elements of the Forester’s chassis to deliver a better balance of ride, handling response, quietness and overall traction performance than offered by competitive vehicles.
